Hattiesburg offers something for everyone. From shopping in the quaint downtown shops and expansive malls, to a wonderful museum, taking in a college football game or going for a nature hike, Hattiesburg has what you’re looking for.

ATTRACTIONS
Hattiesburg Zoo, at Kamper Park, corner of Hardy Street & 17th Ave. Located in the heart of Hattiesburg, this 21-acre zoo is home to lemurs,
llamas, macaws, monkeys, prairie dogs and tigers. Monkeys, zebras and ostrich live in the zoo’s African Veldt. Visitors can ride the Kamper Park & Southern Railroad, a miniature train that runs on a half-mile track through the zoo.

Library of Hattiesburg, 329 Hardy St., Recipient of the 1996 Governor’s Award for the Design of Public Space and featured in Southern Living magazine, the Library is home to a unique, circular 167-foot colorful mural with historical and contemporary images of South Mississippi. Titled “The Spirit that Builds,” the mural was painted on sandblasted stainless steel by internationally renowned artist William Baggett. Other varying exhibits also are on display. Open Mon-Thurs 8 am - 8 pm Fri-Sat 10 am - 4 pm. (601) 582-4461.

Lauren Rogers Museum of Art, 5th Ave. at 7th St., Laurel. This museum is noted for its collection of English Georgian Silver, an extensive collection of Japanese Ukiyo-o wood-block prints, and one of the finest collections of Native American baskets in the world. Museum hours are Tues-Sat, 10 am - 4:45 pm, Sun, 1 pm - 4 pm. closed on Mondays and major holidays. Free admission. (601) 649-6374.

USM Museum of Art, University of Southern Mississippi campus, features exhibits of major traveling shows, solo and group exhibitions by professional and student artists. Includes the Woods Gallery and the Lok Exhibition Gallery. Open 8 am - noon and 1 pm - 5 pm weekdays. Free admission. (601) 266-4972.

GETTING TO HATTIESBURG
By Road: Highway 49 and Interstate 59 intersection in Hattiesburg.
By Air: Hattiesburg-Laurel Regional Airport is located approximately 10 miles north of Hattiesburg and 23 miles south of Laurel. The airport provides the region’s commercial, charter and private aviation services. With direct interstate access from both Hattiesburg and Laurel, air travel is easy and trouble free. Travelers can select from a number of daily departures with connections to many U.S. cities and foreign countries.

SHOPPING & DINING
If you love to check out the shopping when you travel, Hattiesburg has something for you, too! The Turtle Creek Mall boasts six anchor stores and more than 78 specialty stores. There is also the Cloverleaf Mall, occupied by discount and outlet stores, including the famous Hudson’s Salvage Store, for those who love to find a good bargain. For the collector, Hattiesburg has many fine antique and unique specialty shops, as well. After a hard day of shopping, relax at one of the many fine restaurants.

THE ARTS
A wonderful representation of Hattiesburg’s many cultural opportunities, the University of Southern Mississippi regularly features musicals, plays, concerts and other performances.

CAMPING, FISHING & WATER SPORTS
Pat Harrison Waterway District Waterparks

Flint Creek Water Park, Highway 29, Wiggins, (601) 928-3051. 600 acres for fishing, swimming, water-skiing, hiking and boating. Visit Watertown featuring 4 giant water slides. Primitive camping, RV camping and cabins available.

Little Black Creek Water Park Located between Purvis and Lumberton, off 1-59, (601) 794-2957: 600 acres for swimming, fishing, hiking and boating. primitive camping. RV camping and cabins available.

Paul B. Johnson State Park (G-13) Highway 49 South, Hattiesburg, (601) 582-7721: 300-acre lake with group facilities, nature trail, paddle boats, canoeing, fishing and an 18 hole Disc Golf course. Picnic areas contain double and single shelters and six large pavilions. Visitors Center offers souvenirs, game room, restrooms and a room available for meetings or banquet meals. Primitive camping, RV camping and cabins available. Call for fees.

The Longleaf Trace, a continuing “work-in-progress”, is Mississippi’s first and to date only Rails to Trails conversion and conservancy project. The 10 to 14 foot wide asphalt trail winds itself 40.25 miles in length from the Gateway at Southern Miss, its origin on the eastern limit, to the Gateway at Prentiss, its origin on the western limit. In addition to the 40.25 mile multipurpose recreational trail the Longleaf Trace consists of the gateway at Southern Miss, which serves as the official administrative and welcome center to the Longleaf Trace and houses a bicycle rental, repair, and retail service, a Gateway facility at the western terminus (Gateway at Prentiss), six restroom stations, a tunnel underneath the 38th avenue/7th street junction and an overpass over I-59 in western Hattiesburg. A number of private developments and rest stops also exist and others are being developed along the Trace. An equestrian trail, approximately 23 miles in length, runs parallel to the trail between the communities of Carson and Epley. The Trace is an environmental asset and offers your generation and future generations the opportunity to enjoy a trip through nature’s pristine settings and an opportunity to enjoy the splendor of South Mississippi’s outdoors.
