HUNTING AND FISHING
Mississippi
fishing is the most popular outdoor activity in the state.
The mild climate promotes a year-round growing season for
the state’s game fish and enables outdoorsman to comfortably
combine Mississippi fishing with many other outdoor
activities. You’ll find more than 2 million acres of public
Mississippi hunting lands, miles of rivers, hundreds of
lakes and over 100 miles of coastline along the beautiful
Gulf of Mexico. Use the Mississippi hunting and fishing
guide to find tips on camo and lures, hunting & fishing
seasons and regulations, licenses and outfitters throughout
the state.
WATER SPORTS
When it comes to water sports
and activities, Mississippi has something for everyone. Try
out Mississippi boating and sailing, kayaking, swimming,
snorkeling, scuba diving and beach-combing. You can also go
fishing for more than 200 species of fish in Mississippi’s
lakes and rivers or even try deep-sea fishing off of
Mississippi’s Gulf Coast.
BIRDING
Mississippi is a
birdwatcher’s paradise, offering 163 species identified in
combined efforts spearheaded by Mississippi Audubon in the
2003 Great Backyard Bird Count program. Begin your bird
watching vacation and observe Ruby-throat and Dixie
Hummingbirds descend upon the Strawberry Plains Audubon
Center, near Holly Springs, where Annual Hummingbird
Migration Celebration gets underway each year. In the
development stage is the expansion of the Great River
Birding Trail along the lower Mississippi River, which will
offer even greater birding opportunities on your next bird
watching vacation for lovers of our finely feathered
friends.
RECREATIONAL TRAILS
“Let’s take a walk,” takes on
a whole new meaning in Mississippi. Longleaf Trace is a
rails-to-trails project and features 41 miles of well
shaded, wonderful natural landscaping that includes high
embankments through low areas for added interest. Located
near Hattiesburg, Longleaf Trace is just one of the many
Mississippi hiking, biking, walking, and horseback-riding
trails throughout the state.
Take a hike in Mississippi
and treat yourself to priceless views of pristine wilderness
and wildlife. You’ll appreciate such Mississippi hiking
trails as the Longleaf Trail, the Natchez Trace Trail (a
National Scenic Trail) and the Black Creek Trail, arguably
one of the finest hiking trails in the Southeastern U.S. You
can enjoy year-round Mississippi hiking, though summers can
be hot and humid.
